But destroying the franchises would increase McDonalds' profits, since all those independent businesses would have to buy new fryers, shop-fittings, etc from McDonalds. Presumably, they would be insured for their own restaurants.

Actually only about 30% of McDonalds in the UK are franchises. The majority are owned and operated by the company.
So destroy them all.
